About This Event

According to the KIDS COUNT® Data Book, households for which the availability of food is uncertain, insufficient, or limited due to economic, physical, or other constraints are considered “food insecure.” Nearly 13 percent of children in Boone County live in households without secure access to adequate nutritious food.

Food insecurity has long-term effects on the mental, physical, social and economic health of children and families. When children don’t get enough food or don’t have a nutritious diet, they have trouble performing in school and maintaining overall health. Research shows food insecure children are more likely to suffer from illness, have developmental delays, or health deficiencies that track into adulthood.

Join us for this community presentation and discussion to:

  • better understand food insecurity in Boone County;
  • learn causes and implications of food insecurity for children; and
  • discover community resources and how the community is working to address this issue through the local health coalition.

    Community Wellness Coordinator, Purdue Extension Boone and Montgomery Counties

    Holly Catron and Lisa Cangany work as part of Purdue Extension to improve the health of Boone County residents through policy, system, and environment change and education. Lisa chairs the Food Pantry Coalition and they have worked to connect community garden produce and eggs through the HATCH program. They provide training to improve nutrition and recently worked with the Healthy Coalition to add food insecurity goals to the Boone County Health Improvement Plan.
