Teaching Kids How to Problem Solve
Dennis Bumgarner, ACSW, LCSW, Chapel Hill Center for Brief Therapy

Participants will learn fundamentals of problem-solving approaches and the skills that flow from those concepts as they relate to the everyday, real-world challenges faced by young people. Armed with this knowledge, youth workers can transform themselves from mere advice-givers to engaged adults who help young people tap into their personal resources for changing as well as learning new approaches for problem-solving.

Participants will learn:
- Places to start the problem-solving process
- Common problem-solving mistakes made by kids
- Ways to help the child maintain change, once started

Audience: School Counselors, Case Managers, Probation/Juvenile Justice Professionals, Foster Parents, Youth Ministers, Mentors, Afterschool Program Managers
Skill Level(s): Mid-Level (4-8 years) and Advanced (8+ years)
Relates to Kids Ages: Ten and older

Reaching Disconnected Parents
LaMarr Darnell Shields & David Miller, The Urban Leadership Institute

Families care about their children and want to be good partners. Often, though, a lack of time, easily accessible information, consumer friendly materials, or willing partners can make the process of involvement cumbersome at best, and sometimes nonexistent. This workshop provides tangible strategies to engage parents who are often non-responsive and apathetic. Explore the factors that lead to these behaviors and hear about lessons learned from Urban Leadership Institute's direct work with parents.

Participants will learn:
- Ways to engage disconnected parents
- Barriers to parental engagement
- How parental engagement impacts student achievement

Audience: Family Service Providers, Parent Educators, Case Managers, Social Workers, Teachers, Counselors, Outreach Coordinators, Juvenile Justice Professionals and Law Enforcement

Out-of-State and Non-Youth Worker Policy
Trainings offered by the Indiana Youth Institute are intended to support the professional development of Indiana youth workers. Out-of state registrants will be asked to provide a list of Indiana counties served prior to confirming your registration. Individuals who do not serve Indiana youth will be placed on a waiting list and notified no later than five business days prior to the event if there is space available at the requested training.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
As a courtesy to your fellow youth workers, please notify the Indiana Youth Institute if you are unable to attend the training for which you are registered. To request a refund, cancellations must be received no later than three (3) business days prior to the training. Substitutions of attendees may be made at any time.
