INDIANA COLLEGE SUCCESS MENTORING INITIATIVE:  OVERVIEW

Funded by the College Access Challenge Grant

Since the fall of 2010, Indiana Youth Institute/ Indiana Mentoring Partnership has been under contract with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE)  to manage the development and implementation of a standard mentoring model for selected mentoring organizations (Providers) in partnership with selected high schools to support the state’s overall College Success Initiative as funded by CACG.   This component of the overall state’s initiative is the Indiana College Success Mentoring (ICSM) Initiative.  Consistent with the broader purpose of the grant, the purpose of this initiative is to strengthen and support mentoring opportunities for Twenty-first Century Scholar’s high school and college students in so as to advance college access and success.

Components of College Success Initiative

  • College Success Coalitions (currently in 20 counties, with 20 more counties added annually) County and statewide networks of organizations with the shared goal of increasing the percentage of students who enter and graduate from college on time.
  • Campaign and Communication Support (for all Indiana Schools) Planning for College (College GO! Week-Fall), Paying for College (Cash for College-Winter), Preparing for College (KnowHow2Go-Spring/Summer).
  • Online Support (for all students at selected ICS high schools) Online college/ career readiness tools underwritten and available to students, their families & school staff.
  • Indiana College Success Mentoring (for selected students at ICSM high schools) Provides each participating Twenty-first Century Scholar with an intensive mentoring relationship and a collaborative support system from their local ICSM high school, contracted mentoring organization and local TFCSP office.  Mentoring relationship extends from secondary level into post-secondary level.

Anticipated Outcome:  Participating 21st Century Scholars will be more likely to (1) plan for college, 2) pay for college and (3) graduate from college on time (within 4 years for colleges and universities,  2 years for community or junior colleges or the required completion time for vocational, technical and business schools.
