Businesses And Trade Associations

Family-friendly policies promote the healthy development of children and youth by allowing employees to be more engaged in the lives of their children.  At the same time, these policies build positive relationships between workers and their employers, boosting morale and employee loyalty.  Learn more about successful workplace practices that encourage family involvement, or find out more about IYI’s annual Family Friendly Workplace Awards that recognize exemplary workplace policies in our state.

Businesses can play an important role in encouraging young people to graduate from high school or encouraging employees to volunteer in other ways:

  • Jobs for America’s Graduates-Indiana, a program coordinated by IYI, that provides intensive youth development and mentoring for at-risk high school students and connects them to businesses for summer jobs and post-secordinary school opportunities.
  • Common Goal, an initiative of the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce to raise the graduation rate by pairing kids with business mentors.
  • 100 Black Men, with active chapters in Indianapolis and Gary, where volunteers are trained and certified to become mentors, advocates, and role models for the youth within their communities.
  • Success by Six, a program operating under local United Way organizations, that galvanizes business, government and non-profit leaders around early childhood development, increasing access to services, advocating for public policies and improving systems – budgets, laws and supports – to improve young children’s lives.
  • Communities in Schools, with affiliates in East Chicago, Jeffersonville, Knox and Richmond, which connects needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.
